Article Summary

Schewe, P. Winter 2008.
Direct service recommendations for children and caregivers exposed to community and domestic violence. Best Practices in Mental Health 4(1):31–47. http://lyceumbooks.com/MentalHJournal.htm.

This article looks not only at children exposed to domestic and community violence but also at caregivers. It begins with a review of literature related to establishing and running help groups. Other topics include: ways to get children to open up, the alternating placement of guilt with regards to domestic and community violence, and which methods seem to be the most useful in treatment. The author describes a survey conducted to examine the effectiveness of community-based services for caregivers and the outcomes for children who had been exposed to violence. The study covered nine sites in Illinois. The results suggest that direct services benefited both children and their caregivers. Children benefited most from services focusing on identifying and expressing their feelings, distinguishing between good and bad contact, and domestic and community violence. The article concludes by pointing out that Early Head Start and Head Start employees are in an ideal position to deal with the developmental needs of children.
