Building resiliency in families with young children exposed to violence: The Safe Start Initiative Pilot Study. Best Practices in Mental Health 4(1):48–64. http://lyceumbooks.com/MentalHJournal.htm
The Safe Start Initiative Pilot Study looked at the interaction between risk and protective factors with regards to families with young children who have been exposed to acts of violence. Three groups of clients were studied over 2 years to observe changes in parental stress and parent–child interaction. Families with a heightened level of stress required immediate attention and support. The two main findings: (1) Families reported that the Pinellas Safe Start family-based intervention method effectively lowered family stress. (2) A family’s needs and protective factors are a strong indicator of the amount of stress it experiences.
