Research Directions in Child Neglect and Exposure to violence. In Protecting Children, Vol. 22, Nos. 3 & 4 (Special Issue: Exposure to Violence), pp. 10- 19.
This article begins with a statistic from the World Health Organization, noting that violence results in more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide a year. We are reminded, too, that exposure to violence can have a profound and lasting effect on a child’s development. The four authors address the risk and consequences of child neglect and obstacles and the challenges of reporting child neglect. They then take an in-depth look at the relationship between child neglect and exposure to violence, pointing out that while there is research on each problem independently, studies on the relationship between the two are lacking.
