Article Summary
Kracke, K., Lamb, Y., and Hyde, M. Winter 2008.
The Safe Start Demonstration Project: Knowledge building to knowledge transfer for children exposed to violence. Best Practices in Mental Health 4(1):92–98. http://lyceumbooks.com/MentalHJournal.htm.
The authors note how an extremely large number of children have at some time been exposed to violence and how destructive this exposure can be. The study they describe—the Safe Start Demonstration Project—was conducted to understand the outcome and impacts of children being exposed to violence, to develop the means to prevent exposure, and to establish practical systems of care across the fields of mental health, law enforcement, and education. The article outlines the initiative’s framework with a focus on building knowledge and then transferring that knowledge. Finally, the authors offer solutions to challenges that practitioners might face when dealing with children who have been exposed to violence. And they review multiple sources of literature pertinent to the issue.
