The Safe Start Initiative: Advancing System and Practice Responses to Children Exposed to Violence. In Protecting Children, Vol. 22, Nos. 3 & 4 (Special Issue: Exposure to Violence), pp. 80-95.
The Safe Start Initiative is a program devoted to reducing the consequences of children’s exposure to violence, in the home and in the community. The authors outline the initiative’s different phases, including a helpful graphic depicting the framework behind it. In this article they focus on just one aspect of the program—advancing systems and practice responses with regards to children exposed to violence. The main focus is the first phase of the program—Safe Start Initiative Demonstration Sites. The authors fully dissect the design, rationale, theories, and methodology behind this phase. In their conclusion, they discuss the implications of their research and how it can be used. One major suggestion they put forth is for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to broaden their view of what is violence and the impact it can have. They also stress the distinction between direct and indirect experience of violence, and the impact that both can have on both children and family members.
