No Wonder We Are Dizzy, We Are Running Around in Circles: The Impact of Exposure to Violence on Adolescents. In Protecting Children, Vol. 22, Nos. 3 & 4 (Special Issue: Exposure to Violence), pp. 54-65.
Why is the area of child exposure to violence such a growing concern? Elena P. Cohen and Lonna Davis point out that 9 million out of the 22.3 million adolescents ages 12 to 17 living in America during 1997 witnessed serious acts of violence in their communities or homes. And this exposure poses a serious developmental risk. The authors thus aim to increase public awareness and improve the understanding of service providers working with youth, as well as to encourage the design of policies and practices to identify and engage individuals exposed to violence and respond to their needs. Based on their research, they offer recommendations to service providers and administrators Most are program-specific and target specific groups and they involve both the federal and state governments. The article offers an in-depth look at where treatment for children exposure to violence is, and where it needs to go.
